The President of the Council of the Nation, Azzouz Nasseri, has expressed his deepest condolences following the death of mujahid (independence war veteran), historian, and writer Mohamed Harbi, who passed away yesterday, Thursday, at the age of 93.
Nasseri shared his message of condolence via his account on the X platform, stating: “It is with great sadness and sorrow that we received the news of the death of the mujahid, historian, and writer Mohamed Harbi, who fought colonialism with both weapons and pen, and dedicated his life to defending the homeland and preserving the national memory. May God have mercy on the deceased, grant him spacious gardens, and inspire his family, relatives, and loved ones with beautiful patience and solace… Indeed, we belong to God, and to Him we shall return.”
The late Mohamed Harbi, born in 1933, was a militant in the national movement and a member of the Federation of the National Liberation Front in France, before joining the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic, where he held several political positions.
Mohamed Harbi was also a university professor and a distinguished historian, known for his valuable writings on the national movement and the liberation revolution, thus contributing to the preservation of national memory for future generations. His work is considered vital for understanding the complexities of Algeria’s struggle for independence and its aftermath.
His contributions to Algerian history and political thought will be remembered and studied for years to come. The nation mourns the loss of a true patriot and intellectual giant.
