Marzouki: Rabat’s Agent Provocateur Provokes Algiers

Algiers, January 2, 2026 – Moncef Marzouki, the former Tunisian president, has once again seized an opportunity to publicly criticize Algeria, accusing it of interfering in Tunisia’s internal affairs. This latest outburst comes at a time when Algerian-Tunisian relations are experiencing significant growth across various sectors.

Marzouki, known for his controversial stances, appears to be actively involved in actions designed to undermine the historically strong ties between the two nations. These actions have been refuted by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who, in a recent address to the nation, affirmed that Algeria has not, and will not, interfere in Tunisia’s domestic matters, emphasizing their shared security interests.

Previously, Tunisian President Kais Saied also dismissed rumors propagated by his detractors regarding alleged military agreements that supposedly compromised Tunisian sovereignty in favor of Algeria. Saied firmly stated that national sovereignty is inviolable and condemned those spreading unfounded claims and fabrications.

Marzouki’s close ties to Moroccan interests, stemming from his upbringing in Tangier, are well-documented. Critics argue that he has become a tool for Rabat, promoting expansionist narratives through limited media outlets primarily within Moroccan circles. His credibility has been reportedly damaged, and now he allegedly exploits manufactured controversies to target Algeria, falsely claiming Algerian interference in Tunisian affairs.

Analysts note that Marzouki’s sudden display of ‘false patriotism’ and attacks on Algeria, a nation that considers Tunisia a sister country, serve to highlight his allegiance to France, where he spent formative years. His ascent to power in 2011 followed dubious attempts to gain influence, including alleged alliances with foreign entities and Zionist organizations. This culminated in a political deal that saw him used as a figurehead for the then-majority constituent assembly, a move considered far removed from the democratic ideals he professes.

Marzouki’s history is marked by contradictions, including advocating for human rights while seemingly ignoring the situation in Western Sahara. His actions continue to raise questions about his motivations and loyalties.
