Zelensky Eyes Defense Minister Change Amidst Reshuffle

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced Friday his intention to replace Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal with Mykhailo Fedorov, the current First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation. The move signals a potential shift in defense strategy as the conflict in the east continues.

Zelensky lauded Fedorov, 34, for his expertise in drone development and digital transformation, areas deemed crucial for the nation’s defense. In a televised address, Zelensky stated that Fedorov is deeply involved in the “Drone Initiative” and has effectively digitized government services and procedures.

“Working alongside the military, military leadership, domestic arms manufacturers, and our partners, we must implement changes in the defense sector that demonstrably contribute to progress,” Zelensky emphasized. He highlighted the need for innovation and modernization within the defense establishment.

While acknowledging Shmyhal’s achievements as minister, Zelensky mentioned that Shmyhal has been offered a new government position, the details of which remain undisclosed. Fedorov’s appointment is subject to parliamentary approval.

President Zelensky did not elaborate on the reasons behind replacing Shmyhal, a former prime minister who assumed the role of Defense Minister in July 2025. The lack of explanation has fueled speculation about the rationale behind the decision.

In a separate announcement, Zelensky appointed Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukrainian military intelligence, as the new head of the Presidential Office. Budanov replaces Andriy Yermak, a powerful figure who recently departed amidst a corruption scandal. This appointment also signals a significant change within the presidential administration.

The reshuffle comes at a critical juncture for Ukraine, as the nation navigates ongoing challenges. The changes in leadership are expected to bring fresh perspectives and potentially accelerate the implementation of new strategies.
