Algiers – Following a stellar start to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Algerian national team, affectionately known as ‘Les Verts’ or ‘The Greens,’ is on track to significantly improve its FIFA world ranking. Three consecutive victories in the group stage signal a resurgence of technical stability and tactical prowess under the current leadership.
This positive momentum extends beyond the field, directly influencing Algeria’s projected FIFA ranking. Should The Greens continue their winning streak and reach the AFCON final, a substantial leap in the rankings is anticipated.
The team’s dominant performance in the group stage, securing the maximum 9 points, has provided a considerable boost to their FIFA points tally. These victories, earned against formidable continental opponents, have amplified the value of these points. This ideal start has solidified Algeria’s readiness for major tournaments, placing them in a favorable position for the knockout stages.
Four matches now separate Algeria from the AFCON final. If ‘Les Guerriers’ (The Warriors) navigate these additional knockout rounds and reach the final match, their accumulated points will be sufficient to propel them up the global rankings. Preliminary calculations suggest that Algeria, previously ranked around 34th in the world, could gain between 85 and 105 additional points. This would secure a place among the elite global football nations.
Based on this scenario, and assuming typical results for other international teams, Algeria is projected to climb to between 23rd and 25th in the world rankings following the publication of the next FIFA rankings after the tournament. On the African continent, Algeria will fiercely compete for the second or third position, trailing only one other team, depending on the results of other top contenders.
Beyond the victories themselves, the key to Algeria’s success lies in their tactical consistency, collective discipline, effective attack, and solid defense. These elements, previously lacking, have negatively impacted Algeria’s ranking in the past. Reaching the final would not only represent a continental achievement but also signify Algeria’s official return to the global stage, backed by a strong performance.
