Algeria Grapples with Road Carnage: Urgent Action Needed

Algeria’s roads have, for too long, been plagued by reckless driving, transforming them into zones of lawlessness and tragically resulting in a significant loss of life. The year 2025 alone saw a staggering 4,500 fatalities and 57,000 injuries, leaving many with permanent disabilities.

This alarming situation has become a critical issue, exacerbated by a lenient system susceptible to fraudulent technical inspection documents. The devastating Wadi El Harrach tragedy of August 15, 2025, which claimed the lives of 18 people and injured 24 others, serves as a stark reminder of the consequences.

The victims of this ‘road terrorism’ are countless, impacting men, women, children, students, and the elderly alike. Citizens have repeatedly implored the state, whose primary responsibility is to protect its people, to take decisive action against those responsible for these tragedies.

New traffic law measures, while perceived by some as ‘strict,’ are standard practice in many countries. These regulations pose no concern to drivers who adhere to traffic laws and respect human life, who constitute the majority.

However, predictably, some morally bankrupt elements have rushed to criticize these measures. This occurs despite the public’s long-standing demand for an end to the road carnage that devastates Algerian families daily. A false narrative is being propagated, suggesting that these measures will lead to job losses in the transport sector.

Those behind this manipulation show a blatant disregard for the victims of road terrorism and their families. They contradict ethical and political principles, misleading those who believe their claims that these measures infringe on freedoms – even the freedom to kill. Ironically, the law has not yet been finalized or enacted.

These assertions are merely attempts to destabilize public order. DZWatch urges a rational discussion and swift action to address this critical issue.
