Riyadh is set to host a new round of peace negotiations aimed at addressing critical issues in southern and eastern Yemen. The initiative comes at the request of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, led by President Rashad al-Alimi, who responded to calls from various political factions in the affected regions for a comprehensive dialogue.
Dr. Mutab Bazyad, Deputy Director of the Yemeni Prime Minister’s Office, confirmed that President al-Alimi conveyed this desire to Saudi Arabia, which promptly offered to host the talks. Preparations are underway to ensure broad representation from the southern and eastern governorates.
The upcoming dialogue seeks to address a range of concerns, including those specific to southern and eastern Yemen, with the ultimate goal of achieving lasting peace and stability through political solutions. The talks aim to de-escalate existing tensions and pave the way for a more unified and secure Yemen.
Bazyad also addressed recent military developments, stating that the deployment of ‘Nation Shield’ forces in Hadramout and al-Mahra provinces is part of a broader government plan, designed to minimize civilian casualties and protect innocent lives. He emphasized that these actions were a response to alleged violations against civilians in the eastern governorates during December.
The primary objective, he asserted, is to safeguard the population and bolster security in these areas. Prime Minister Salem Saleh bin Bureik has reportedly maintained close contact with local authorities in Hadramout and al-Mahra to monitor the situation and address any challenges arising from the military operation. The priority remains the continued provision of public services and the prevention of any abuses affecting public or private property.
According to the Deputy Director, the Governor of Hadramout, Salem Ahmed al-Khanbashi, is overseeing the operation on the ground, ensuring coordination and adherence to the government’s objectives. The Saudi-brokered talks represent a significant opportunity to address the root causes of conflict and build a more stable and prosperous future for all Yemenis.
