Algiers, January 4, 2026 – The National Meteorology Office has issued a severe weather alert for several provinces across Algeria, warning of thunderstorms and strong winds. The advisory, released earlier today, indicates that the adverse weather conditions are expected to persist throughout the day.
A primary alert focuses on the western and central regions of the country. Provinces under this warning include El Bayadh, Naama, Sidi Bel Abbes, Tlemcen, Ain Temouchent, Oran, Mascara, Mostaganem, Relizane, Tiaret, Chlef, Tipaza, Algiers, Boumerdes, Tizi Ouzou, Bouira, Blida, Medea, Ain Defla, Tissemsilt, and Oum El Bouaghi. Residents in these areas are advised to take precautions against heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding.
A separate advisory has been issued for provinces further inland, specifically Djelfa, Ouled Djellal, M’Sila, Batna, Tebessa, and Khenchela. These regions can anticipate continued thunderstorms and significant rainfall throughout the day.
Furthermore, a warning concerning strong winds and blowing sand has been issued for the southern provinces of Ouargla, Ghardaia, El Menia, Timimoun, Adrar, In Salah, and Tamanrasset. These conditions are expected to prevail from 9:00 AM until 6:00 PM today. Motorists and residents in these areas should exercise extreme caution due to reduced visibility and potential hazards caused by the strong winds and sandstorms.
