UN Security Council to Hold Emergency Meeting on Venezuela

The United Nations Security Council will convene an emergency meeting this Monday to discuss the recent military operation conducted by the United States in Venezuela. The operation reportedly resulted in the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife in Caracas.

According to Khadija Ahmed, spokesperson for the Permanent Mission of Somalia to the United Nations, Somalia, which holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council for January, has scheduled the emergency session for 10:00 AM local time in New York, corresponding to 3:00 PM GMT.

The request for this emergency meeting was initiated by Venezuela and conveyed through Colombia, which currently holds a non-permanent seat on the Security Council. This development occurs amidst escalating regional and international tensions following the unexpected US military action, which has triggered widespread diplomatic reactions.

Reports indicate that US forces detained President Maduro and his wife on Saturday, transporting them out of the country by air. These reports cite statements attributed to US President Donald Trump, detailing a large-scale operation within Venezuela. The situation remains fluid, and DZWatch will continue to provide updates as they become available.

This is a developing story.
