New York, January 4, 2026 – The United Nations Security Council will convene an emergency session tomorrow, Monday, to address the recent military operation conducted by the United States in Venezuela, DZWatch has learned. The operation resulted in the apprehension of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife in Caracas.
According to Khadija Ahmed, spokesperson for the Permanent Mission of Somalia to the United Nations, the Somali presidency of the Security Council for the month of January has scheduled the emergency meeting for 10:00 AM local time in New York (3:00 PM GMT).
The request for the urgent session was initiated by Venezuela and conveyed through Colombia, which currently holds a non-permanent seat on the Council. The meeting takes place amid escalating regional and international tensions following the surprise U.S. military action, which has triggered widespread diplomatic reactions.
Sources indicate that Nicolas Maduro and his wife were taken out of the country by U.S. forces on Saturday. Reports cite U.S. President Donald Trump as confirming the capture following a large-scale operation within Venezuela. The situation continues to develop as the Security Council prepares to deliberate on the matter.
DZWatch will continue to provide updates on this developing story.
