Algerian Sahara Image Wins National Geographic Accolade

Tamanrasset, Algeria – A stunning image from the heart of Algeria’s Hoggar Sahara has been recognized by National Geographic, placing the Algerian south in the global tourism spotlight. The photograph, showcasing the raw beauty of the Sahara, was selected as one of the most breathtaking images of 2025.

The selected image, captured by renowned photographer Marcel van Oosten, highlights the dramatic landscapes and unique geological formations of the region. Van Oosten described the arduous journey required to reach the remote location, a quest that spanned over 13 years of exploration and persistent effort. He emphasized the vital role played by his Tuareg guides, whose intimate knowledge of the desert’s hidden paths and secrets was crucial to his success.

Tourism experts believe that the widespread publication of this image will significantly boost the appeal of the Algerian Sahara to international tourists. In recent years, the region has seen a growing interest from foreign visitors seeking authentic desert experiences.

Algeria aims to become a leading global tourism destination by 2030, with the vast Saharan regions playing a pivotal role in this strategy. The government is actively promoting the diverse natural attractions of the south, including its mountains, unique rock formations, and oases.

To facilitate tourism growth, the Algerian government has implemented measures to simplify visa procedures for foreign tourists traveling to the south. Tourists can now obtain visas upon arrival at Algerian airports, provided they are part of organized tour groups. This initiative aims to encourage more visitors to explore the wonders of the Algerian Sahara.

Official figures indicate a rising interest in Algerian tourism. According to the Ministry of Tourism and Traditional Industry, approximately 47,000 foreign tourists visited the Algerian Sahara during the 2024-2025 season. The number of travel agencies operating in the region has also increased, reflecting the growing demand for Saharan adventures.
