Bordj Bou Arreridj, Algeria – Tragedy struck the province of Bordj Bou Arreridj today as two individuals succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning. The incident, stemming from a faulty heating system, highlights the ongoing dangers of inadequate ventilation and aging appliances during the winter months.
Civil Protection units responded to an emergency call at 12:40 PM local time, reporting a gas leak at a residence in the village of Ahnajel, located within the municipality of El Kolla and the district of Djaafra. Upon arrival, first responders discovered two victims, a 71-year-old male and a 73-year-old female, already deceased.
Carbon monoxide, an odorless and colorless gas, is a silent killer produced by the incomplete combustion of fuels such as natural gas, propane, and wood. Faulty or poorly maintained heating systems are a common source of leaks, posing a significant risk to residents, particularly during periods of increased heating demand.
The deceased were transported to the morgue at the local hospital for further examination. Local authorities have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine the precise cause of the leak and ensure that all safety protocols were followed. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of regular maintenance of heating appliances and ensuring adequate ventilation in homes, especially during the colder months. DZWatch urges all residents to prioritize safety and take necessary precautions to prevent future tragedies.
