Kim Justifies Missile Launch Citing ‘Geopolitical Crisis’

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has justified the nation’s recent ballistic missile launch, the first of 2026, by citing the current ‘geopolitical crisis.’ This announcement followed the United States’ arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, an event strongly condemned by Pyongyang.

Speaking at an arms factory in Pyongyang, Kim stated that the ‘recent geopolitical crisis and complex international events underscore the necessity’ of strengthening North Korea’s military capabilities. He emphasized that ‘significant progress’ has been made in preparing North Korea’s nuclear forces ‘for real war,’ according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The missile launch, conducted on Sunday, involved what KCNA described as a new, ‘advanced’ weapons system utilizing hypersonic missiles, a technology first tested in October of last year. While the exact number of missiles launched remains unspecified, KCNA reported that they ‘accurately hit targets at a distance of 1,000 kilometers’ in the Sea of Japan.

South Korea’s military confirmed the launch, stating that Pyongyang fired ballistic missiles into the sea. This action coincided with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung’s official visit to China, potentially adding another layer of complexity to regional relations.

North Korea has consistently accused Washington of attempting to destabilize its government, viewing its military and nuclear programs as a necessary deterrent. The arrest of President Maduro has seemingly reinforced these long-held suspicions and provided further justification for Pyongyang’s military advancements. The North Korean regime considers the US action as an infringement of Venezuelan sovereignty.
