Algiers, January 5, 2026 – The General Union of Algerian Traders and Craftsmen (UGCAA) has refuted claims circulating on social media regarding a purported strike scheduled for Thursday, January 8, 2026. The union has labeled these claims as baseless and malicious rumors.
In a statement released Monday, the UGCAA asserted that these misleading campaigns are designed to destabilize the market and sow discord among traders and citizens. The union expressed confidence that these attempts would fail in the face of the traders’ awareness and understanding of their national responsibilities, particularly with the approach of the holy month of Ramadan.
“Traders and economic operators are conscious and responsible,” the statement emphasized, “and will continue to open their shops and conduct their commercial activities regularly, in loyalty to the message and sacrifices of the martyrs, and in embodiment of the cohesion of society and the strength of the internal front. This is a resounding response to all those who seek to undermine the stability of Algeria and its noble people.”
The UGCAA further stated that it takes all the difficulties faced by traders seriously and is working collaboratively with the government, the Ministry of Internal Trade and Market Regulation, and local authorities to establish channels of dialogue and consultation. The aim is to find practical solutions to address all the challenges facing the commercial sector, in a manner that safeguards the interests of traders, economic operators, and the national market, while strengthening the stability of the national economy.
The statement also called on transporters and taxi drivers to resume their activities. The UGCAA urged all traders, craftsmen, and economic operators to mobilize and open their shops on Thursday, January 8, 2026, sending a clear message to the enemies of Algeria that traders are faithful to the message of our righteous martyrs. The union reiterated its commitment to supporting the Algerian economy and ensuring a stable market for all citizens.
