Trump Considers Greenland Purchase, Military Option Not Ruled Out

The White House confirmed Wednesday that President Donald Trump and his national security team are seriously exploring the possibility of the United States purchasing Greenland from Denmark. White House Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated during a press briefing that “all options are always on the table for President Trump… the President’s first choice is always diplomacy.”

However, the White House pointedly did not rule out the potential for military action. When questioned about why Trump wouldn’t dismiss military action against a NATO ally, Leavitt reiterated, “All options remain on the table for President Trump.” She added that acquiring Greenland “would give us greater control over the Arctic region.”

Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, is the world’s largest island and one of the least populated. It holds the second-largest ice sheet globally, after Antarctica. Situated between the Arctic and North Atlantic Oceans, Greenland is known by its inhabitants as “Inuit Nunaat” or “Kalaallit Nunaat,” meaning “Land of the People” in the local language. Its capital, Nuuk, is referred to as “Godthåb” by some.

Geographically part of North America, Greenland is geopolitically linked to Europe due to its ties to Denmark. Its landscape is characterized by vast stretches of tundra and glaciers. Located northeast of Canada, Greenland’s closest neighbor is Canada, a mere 26 kilometers away.

The United States has previously attempted to purchase Greenland, but both the Danish and Greenlandic governments have rejected these offers. On December 22, 2024, Trump expressed that U.S. ownership and control of Greenland are essential for national security and global freedom, hinting at the potential use of force to achieve this objective.
