Algiers – In anticipation of the upcoming Eid al-Adha holiday, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has ordered the importation of one million head of sheep to bolster the national livestock market. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Sifi Gherib during a government meeting held earlier today.
According to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s office, Mr. Gherib informed members of the government of the President’s decision to support the domestic livestock supply in preparation for the Eid al-Adha celebrations. The importation of one million sheep is intended to ensure adequate supply and stabilize prices for consumers during this important religious holiday.
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development and Fisheries has been tasked with immediately initiating the necessary measures to implement the President’s directive. This includes coordinating with relevant agencies to secure import permits, arrange transportation, and ensure the proper handling and distribution of the livestock upon arrival in Algeria.
Eid al-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is one of the most important holidays in the Islamic calendar. It is traditionally marked by the sacrifice of livestock, typically sheep, goats, or cattle, and the sharing of the meat with family, friends, and those in need. The increased demand for livestock during this period often puts pressure on the local market, leading to higher prices.
The government’s decision to import a significant number of sheep reflects its commitment to ensuring food security and price stability for Algerian citizens, particularly during religious holidays. This measure is expected to alleviate concerns about potential shortages and price hikes, allowing families to celebrate Eid al-Adha without undue financial burden. Further details regarding the implementation of the import plan will be released by the Ministry of Agriculture in the coming days.
