Somaliland Official Reveals Reasons Behind Israel Normalization

A senior official in Somaliland has revealed the motivations behind the region’s move to normalize relations with Israel. Harsi Ali, head of the ruling party in the self-declared Republic of Somaliland, stated that the decision stems from a desire to achieve formal international recognition after decades of isolation.

In an interview, Ali emphasized that Somaliland considers itself an independent state for the past 34 years, and securing international recognition is a strategic national priority. He asserted that establishing political and diplomatic ties with Israel is not merely an option but a necessity to ensure legal and political recognition on the world stage.

Addressing the rationale behind normalizing relations with Israel, Ali clarified that these relations are purely political and diplomatic, aimed at mutual recognition and economic cooperation, devoid of any military involvement or religious considerations. He stressed that these ties are not related to the ongoing events in Palestine or any military conflicts in the region, but rather based on Somaliland’s national interest and its right to international recognition.

Responding to criticism regarding Somaliland’s engagement with a state accused of committing crimes against Palestinians, Ali stated, “We are talking about political and diplomatic dealings between two countries, and we do not interfere in military conflicts or humanitarian issues beyond our authority.” He affirmed that Somaliland’s stance towards the Palestinians remains supportive of peace and against violence, dismissing any allegations about hosting Palestinians or establishing Israeli military bases as baseless fabrications.

Regarding the Arab League’s rejection and official stance on the normalization, Ali emphasized that the lack of recognition of Somaliland for 34 years has not affected the region’s policies, and that Somaliland seeks to manage its affairs in a way that serves the interests of its people, regardless of the official Arab position. He further added that recognition from Israel, the United States, or any other country is a purely diplomatic matter.

Ali concluded by stating that any political relations with Israel are not intended to create tension in the region or harm neighboring countries.
