Algiers, [Date of Publication – e.g., January 8, 2026] – The Algerian government has announced a paid holiday for all workers in celebration of Yennayer, the Amazigh New Year. According to a joint statement released by the Ministry of Labour, Employment, and Social Security, and the General Directorate of Public Service and Administrative Reform, Monday, January 12, 2026, will be a public holiday.
The holiday applies to all employees across both public and private sectors. This includes workers in public institutions, administrations, public and private bodies, and public and private companies, regardless of their legal status, including those employed on a daily or hourly basis.
The statement clarifies that this decision is in accordance with Law No. 63-278, dated July 26, 1963, which outlines the list of legal holidays in Algeria, as amended and supplemented. The law recognizes Yennayer as a national holiday, ensuring that all workers have the opportunity to celebrate this important cultural event.
However, the government has also stipulated that public institutions, administrations, bodies, and companies must take necessary measures to ensure the continuity of essential services. This applies particularly to services operating on a rotational basis.
The announcement is expected to be widely welcomed across Algeria, as Yennayer holds significant cultural importance for the country’s Amazigh population. The holiday provides an opportunity for families and communities to come together and celebrate their heritage.
The Ministry encourages all employers to adhere to the holiday regulations and ensure that their employees are granted the paid day off. This measure aims to promote cultural appreciation and respect for the diverse traditions within Algerian society.
