Nigeria Coach: Algeria a Tough Opponent, Osimhen Ready

Nigeria’s head coach, Erik Schiel, has described the Algerian national team as a “strong opponent” ahead of their quarter-final clash in the Africa Cup of Nations. Schiel emphasized that his focus is entirely on securing a victory in the crucial match.

Speaking at a press conference, Schiel confirmed that star striker Victor Osimhen is fit and available for selection. “Osimhen is in the squad and ready to play,” he stated, providing a boost to the Nigerian attack.

Schiel also reflected on his previous experience working in Algeria, highlighting his time with MC Oran as a valuable period that helped him gain insights into Algerian football. He noted that he had previously played alongside talented Algerian players, emphasizing their technical abilities and vision on the field. He added, however, that the upcoming match would be the final test.

“Focus is essential,” Schiel stated, adding that he is trying to instill this mentality in his players to ensure they perform at their best physically, mentally, and technically. He stressed that any off-field issues are the responsibility of the Nigerian Football Federation, while his role is confined to the team’s performance on the pitch.

Addressing questions about potential disruptions to training, the coach clarified that such matters are within the purview of the Federation and that he is only responsible for the team’s on-field performance. Schiel acknowledged Algeria’s strengths but also highlighted that every team has weaknesses. He expects a challenging match, no less difficult than any of their previous games in the tournament.

While acknowledging that Algeria playing two extra games *might* give Nigeria a slight physical advantage, Schiel stated that he is not factoring this into his preparations. Instead, he is concentrating on preparing and motivating his players to the best of his ability.

Schiel concluded by reiterating his desire to maintain Nigeria’s playing style against Algeria, anticipating a competitive match between two teams with strong attacking capabilities. He emphasized the need for complete concentration to secure a place in the semi-finals.
