Algeria Faces Nigeria in Crucial AFCON Quarter-Final Clash

Marrakech, DZWatch – The Algerian national football team, ‘Les Verts,’ are set to face Nigeria this evening in a highly anticipated quarter-final match of the Africa Cup of Nations. The game, scheduled to kick off at 17:00 local time at the Marrakech Stadium, marks the 22nd encounter between the two nations in football history.

Algeria will be aiming to continue their journey in the continental tournament and secure a coveted spot in the semi-finals. Standing in their way is a strong Nigerian side that has demonstrated impressive form throughout the competition.

The Algerian squad has completed its preparations for the crucial match. Yesterday’s final training session in Marrakech saw the presence of most players. However, doubts remain over the participation of midfielder Ismael Bennacer and defender Tougai, who is still recovering from an injury.

Historically, Algeria and Nigeria have met nine times in the Africa Cup of Nations. ‘Les Verts’ have emerged victorious in four of those encounters, with two matches ending in a draw, and Nigeria winning three. Their most recent meeting was a memorable one, with Algeria securing a 2-1 victory in the semi-final of the 2019 AFCON in Cairo, a tournament where the ‘Desert Warriors’ went on to claim their second continental title.

The match will be officiated by a Senegalese refereeing team led by Issa Sy, assisted by his compatriots Djibril Camara and Nouha Bangoura. Gilbert Kipkoech Cheruiyot from Kenya will serve as the third assistant referee, with Peter Waweru Kamaku, also from Kenya, as the fourth official. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be overseen by Pierre Ghislain Atcho from Gabon.

DZWatch will provide live updates and post-match analysis of this crucial encounter.
