DZWatch Exclusive: Despite a strong showing in the quarter-final match between Egypt and Ivory Coast, Algerian referee Mustapha Ghorbal is unlikely to be selected to officiate the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), according to former international referee Mohamed Zekrini.
Speaking to DZWatch, Zekrini stated that while Ghorbal’s performance has been commendable, certain factors within the Confederation of African Football (CAF) could prevent his appointment. He alluded to a bias against Algerian representation in key roles, suggesting that some within CAF may not want to see Algeria excel in all areas of the sport.
“The issues faced by the national team, including controversial refereeing decisions during the match against Nigeria, could also impact the selection of our referees,” Zekrini explained. He implied a potential pattern of unfavorable treatment towards Algerian participants in the tournament.
The former referee highlighted a narrow scenario where Ghorbal might be considered for the final. “Ghorbal’s appointment would only be possible if the final features Nigeria and Senegal. However, even this remains highly improbable,” he added, suggesting that the political dynamics within CAF make such a selection difficult.
This sentiment echoes concerns about fair representation and impartial officiating within African football. The possibility of bias influencing referee assignments raises questions about the integrity of the tournament. While Ghorbal’s skills are not in question, external pressures could ultimately determine his fate in the competition.
DZWatch continues to follow this developing story and will provide updates as they become available.
