President Donald Trump’s motorcade took an altered route to Palm Beach International Airport in Florida yesterday, Sunday, due to a ‘suspicious object’ discovered during pre-arrival security sweeps, according to the White House.
The nature of the object was not specified by White House officials. When questioned by reporters about the incident, President Trump stated, ‘I don’t know anything about it.’
Despite the discovery, the change in route did not disrupt the President’s travel schedule. The motorcade was rerouted along a more circuitous path to ensure a safe arrival at the airport.
During the journey to the airport, motorcycle officers formed a rolling security perimeter around the Presidential motorcade. At one point, the officers nearly collided with support vehicles accompanying the President.
Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesperson for the Secret Service, stated that the decision to take an alternate route was ‘out of an abundance of caution’ and is ‘standard protocol.’
This incident follows a previous security concern in October when the Secret Service discovered a suspicious sniper perch overlooking the area where President Trump was scheduled to disembark Air Force One at the same airport. No individual was found in the vicinity of the platform.
The Secret Service is responsible for the safety and security of the President and other high-ranking officials.
