ALEPPO, Syria – Rapid developments in the Deir Hafer region, east of Aleppo, pose a significant military and security challenge for the Syrian Army, according to military expert General Fayez al-Duwairi. The area, along with strategically important towns like al-Tabqah and Maskaneh, is witnessing a shifting balance of power that currently favors the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
In an analysis provided to DZWatch, General al-Duwairi explained that the sensitivity of Deir Hafer stems not only from its geographical location but also from its direct impact on the security of Aleppo and the overall dynamics of the conflict in northern Syria. He highlighted two key factors contributing to the region’s importance.
Firstly, its proximity to Aleppo. Deir Hafer’s relatively short distance from Syria’s second-largest city means any military activity in the area has immediate implications for the city’s security and stability. Secondly, the SDF’s proactive military posture. General al-Duwairi believes the SDF has initiated preemptive movements and field preparations to thwart any potential advances by the Syrian Army. They are leveraging their understanding of Syrian Army movements and plans in this critical area.
The expert also emphasized the critical strategic importance of water resources, particularly those associated with the Euphrates River. He noted that the SDF controls key locations, including the Tabqa Dam and the Tishrin Dam. Crucially, the main water pumping stations that supply Aleppo are located between these two dams. Control of these pumping stations, which provide water to millions of residents in Aleppo, represents a major economic and humanitarian pressure point that could be exploited in any future confrontation or political negotiation.
Assessing the balance of power, General al-Duwairi argued that the SDF is no longer merely a collection of local armed groups. He stated that it is now effectively operating as a regular army, thanks to years of US military support. This support has enabled the SDF to acquire a diverse arsenal, including four-wheel-drive vehicles, heavy weapons, tanks, armored vehicles, and troop carriers. Furthermore, the SDF has adopted a clear defensive doctrine focused on protecting its lines of control up to the Euphrates River.
