Justice Minister Clarifies Proposed Traffic Law Amendments

Algiers – Minister of Justice, Abderrachid Tabi, has addressed public concerns regarding the proposed amendments to the traffic law, specifically focusing on the revised penal provisions and enhanced penalties.

During his presentation of the organic law concerning the fundamental law of the judiciary before the Council of the Nation on Tuesday, Minister Tabi clarified that some misunderstandings had arisen concerning the draft legislation, particularly concerning the severity of the penalties.

The Minister emphasized that the increased penalties are not intended for individuals involved in ordinary traffic accidents. He stated that the stricter punishments are reserved for instances involving aggravating circumstances, such as driving under the influence of alcohol, narcotics, or other mind-altering substances.

“The severity of the penalty will depend on the outcome of the accident,” Minister Tabi explained. “If the accident does not result in death, the penalty will be different compared to an accident that results in a fatality. In cases of fatal accidents involving aggravating circumstances, the penalties will be significantly increased.”

Minister Tabi reassured citizens that the proposed law aims to protect public safety. He stated that all legislative initiatives are based on thorough studies of current trends and challenges.

“Whenever we address the security, lives, and property of citizens, we need to reorganize, regulate, and perhaps strengthen certain provisions to protect them first and foremost – that is the principle,” he concluded. The Minister affirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring safer roads for all Algerians through comprehensive and well-considered legal frameworks.
