Algiers – Minister of Communication, Zohir Bouamama, has underscored the critical importance of respecting copyright laws, including production rights, as a fundamental pillar for building a modern and professional media landscape in Algeria.
Bouamama made the remarks during the opening of a study day titled “Respecting Copyright: A Cornerstone of Modern Media.” He emphasized that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has, since assuming office, set a clear path by committing to respecting copyright, ensuring press freedom, independence, and professional ethics.
The Minister of Communication stated that copyright is an essential tool for protecting artistic creation, empowering creators to control the use of their works and guaranteeing fair compensation for their efforts. He highlighted the need to strike a balance and achieve harmony between the citizen’s right to access information and the protection of intellectual property rights.
“Respect for copyright is not merely a legal obligation, but a moral imperative that underpins the integrity and sustainability of the media industry,” Bouamama stated. He further added that a robust copyright framework fosters innovation, encourages investment in creative industries, and ultimately contributes to a more vibrant and diverse media ecosystem.
The study day brought together media professionals, legal experts, and representatives from various stakeholders to discuss the challenges and opportunities related to copyright protection in the digital age. Participants explored strategies for raising awareness about copyright issues, combating piracy, and promoting a culture of respect for intellectual property rights within the Algerian media sector. The event served as a platform for exchanging ideas and best practices aimed at strengthening the legal and institutional framework for copyright enforcement in the country.
