Algeria Bolsters Pharmaceutical Ties with Sweden and UK

Algiers, January 13, 2026 – Algeria is actively strengthening its partnerships with Sweden and the United Kingdom in the pharmaceutical sector, signaling a commitment to advancing its domestic industry and fostering international collaboration.

The Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, Wassim Kouideri, held separate meetings today with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden to Algeria, Anna Block Mazoyer, and the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Algeria, James Robert Stephen Downer. The discussions, held at the Ministry headquarters, focused on exploring avenues for bilateral cooperation and investment opportunities within the pharmaceutical industry.

According to a statement released by the Ministry, the meetings provided a valuable platform for exchanging perspectives on the current state and future prospects of bilateral cooperation. Key areas of discussion included opportunities for investment in the pharmaceutical industry, with a particular emphasis on the localization of innovative medicines within Algeria and the transfer of expertise and technology.

Minister Kouideri emphasized the sector’s readiness to support all stakeholders interested in establishing pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities in Algeria, particularly those focused on innovative drugs. He reiterated Algeria’s strong commitment to strengthening cooperation and partnerships with foreign laboratories that contribute to creating added value and providing access to the latest technologies in the pharmaceutical field.

The Minister highlighted that these partnerships are crucial for Algeria’s ambition to become a regional hub for pharmaceutical production and innovation. He further added that the government is prepared to offer incentives and support to companies willing to invest in local manufacturing and research and development.

Notably, the meetings were also attended by the General Manager of AstraZeneca Algeria and the Regional Director for Africa and the Maghreb for the same laboratory, underscoring the importance of existing collaborations and the potential for further expansion.

This initiative reflects Algeria’s strategic vision to enhance its pharmaceutical capabilities, reduce reliance on imports, and ensure access to high-quality medicines for its population. The strengthened partnerships with Sweden and the UK are expected to play a significant role in achieving these goals.
