Algiers, January 16, 2026 – Widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are anticipated to impact nineteen provinces across Algeria today, according to the National Meteorological Office. A level-one weather alert has been issued, urging residents in the affected areas to exercise caution.
The alert, which came into effect at 9:00 AM and remains in place until 3:00 PM, highlights the potential for significant rainfall and lightning activity. Motorists are advised to drive with extreme care, and outdoor activities should be postponed where possible.
The provinces under the weather warning include several in the north and east of the country. Specifically, the alert covers Tizi Ouzou, Bejaia, Jijel, Annaba, Skikda, El Tarf, Guelma, and Souk Ahras. In addition, provinces further inland are also affected, namely M’Sila, Bordj Bou Arreridj, Setif, Mila, and Constantine.
The western regions are not exempt, with Oran, Ain Temouchent, Tlemcen, Mascara, Sidi Bel Abbes, and Naama also facing the threat of severe weather. Residents in these provinces are strongly advised to stay informed about the latest weather updates and heed any instructions issued by local authorities.
