Algiers, Algeria – Several regions across Algeria are bracing for severe weather conditions, including heavy snowfall and torrential rainfall, according to a recent weather alert. The National Meteorological Office has issued an orange alert, warning of potential disruptions due to snow accumulation, icy conditions, and significant rainfall amounts.
The alert indicates that snowfall is expected in mountainous areas exceeding 1100 to 1200 meters in altitude. The snow may extend locally to altitudes of around 1000 meters on Sunday morning. Affected regions include: Tiaret, Tissemsilt, Laghouat, Djelfa, M’Sila, Medea, Ain Defla, Bordj Bou Arreridj, Bouira, and Tizi Ouzou.
Snowfall accumulations are forecast to range between 10 and 15 centimeters, with the affected period lasting from 9:00 PM Saturday evening to 12:00 PM Sunday afternoon. Additionally, lighter snowfall, ranging from 5 to 10 centimeters, is anticipated in the western and southwestern highlands, particularly in the wilayas of Bechar, Tlemcen, Naama, Sidi Bel Abbes, Saida, and El Bayadh, from midday Saturday until 6:00 AM Sunday.
Significant rainfall is also expected across several regions. The central wilayas, including Chlef, Ain Defla, Tipaza, Algiers, Boumerdes, Blida, Medea, Bouira, Tizi Ouzou, M’Sila, Bordj Bou Arreridj, and Djelfa, are forecast to receive between 20 and 30 millimeters of rain from 3:00 PM to 3:00 AM.
Similar rainfall amounts are predicted for the western and southwestern regions, including Tlemcen, Sidi Bel Abbes, Saida, Mascara, Relizane, Mostaganem, Oran, Ain Temouchent, as well as Naama, Bechar, El Bayadh, Laghouat, Tiaret, and Tissemsilt, from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM.
Authorities are urging citizens, particularly those traveling in mountainous areas, to exercise extreme caution due to the risk of slippery roads and difficult travel conditions caused by ice and snow accumulation. Drivers are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and to ensure their vehicles are properly equipped for winter weather.
