Yemen’s Public Prosecutor Investigates Al-Zubaidi on Corruption Charges

Yemen’s Public Prosecutor has launched an investigation into allegations of corruption and other crimes attributed to Aidarus al-Zubaidi, the head of the Southern Transitional Council (STC). According to reports, Judge Qaher Mustafa issued a decree tasking a judicial committee with investigating the accusations, including illicit enrichment and a range of criminal activities.

The official decree stipulates that the committee is authorized to take appropriate legal action based on its findings. The investigation follows earlier reports of a separate committee being formed to probe al-Zubaidi on charges including treason, forming armed groups, and the alleged killing of officers and soldiers within the armed forces. He is also accused of exploiting the cause of southern Yemen for personal gain, resulting in severe violations against civilians.

The allegations against al-Zubaidi extend to sabotage of military installations, attacks on the constitution and constitutional authorities, violation of laws, and compromising the country’s sovereignty and independence.

Previously, the head of the Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad al-Alimi, reportedly dismissed al-Zubaidi from his position and accused him of high treason, distributing weapons, forming armed groups, and committing violations against civilians, referring the case to the Public Prosecutor.

Furthermore, reports indicate that al-Zubaidi allegedly fled Aden by sea, along with others, heading towards the self-declared Republic of Somaliland. He reportedly arrived at the port of Barbera after disabling transponders, before allegedly relocating to the United Arab Emirates.

The investigation represents a significant development in the ongoing political and security landscape of Yemen, and its outcome could have far-reaching consequences for the STC and the broader efforts to resolve the Yemeni conflict. DZWatch will continue to monitor this developing story and provide updates as they become available.
