Algiers, January 18, 2026 – Authorities in Algiers have successfully dismantled a criminal network specializing in organizing clandestine sea crossings, commonly known as “harqa.” The operation, conducted by the judicial police of the Chéraga administrative district, resulted in the arrest of three individuals and the seizure of a vessel equipped for illegal migration.
According to a statement released by the Algiers police department, the investigation was launched following intelligence received regarding a group planning to facilitate unauthorized departures by sea. Subsequent field investigations led to the identification of three individuals with prior criminal records, suspected of coordinating and preparing illegal migration voyages and recruiting potential migrants.
The operation, conducted under the supervision of the relevant prosecutor’s office, led to the apprehension of the suspects and the confiscation of significant resources intended for the illegal crossings. Seized items included a maritime vessel, a boat engine, fifteen life jackets, 180 liters of gasoline, and six barrels filled with water.
Following the completion of legal procedures, the suspects were presented before the competent prosecutor’s office, facing charges related to their involvement in organized illegal migration. This operation underscores the ongoing efforts by Algerian authorities to combat human trafficking and prevent dangerous, unauthorized sea crossings.
