Interior Ministry Issues Urgent Warning About Silent Killer

Algiers – The Ministry of Interior, Local Authorities, and National Planning has issued an urgent appeal to citizens, urging heightened vigilance against the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, often referred to as the ‘silent killer’. This warning comes amid a recent surge in reported cases of asphyxiation.

Recognizing the extreme danger posed by carbon monoxide – a colorless and odorless gas – the Ministry emphasizes that prevention remains the most effective strategy to avoid tragic incidents within homes.

The Ministry strongly recommends the immediate installation of carbon monoxide detectors in all residences, particularly in close proximity to gas-powered heating systems and water heaters. Regular maintenance of all gas appliances is also crucial, as is ensuring that ventilation outlets in rooms and bathrooms remain unobstructed.

Furthermore, citizens are advised to turn off water heaters immediately after use and to regularly ventilate their living spaces to promote air circulation and minimize the accumulation of hazardous gases.

In the event of sudden symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, or difficulty breathing, the Ministry urges individuals to immediately evacuate the premises and seek fresh air. Contacting the Civil Protection services for swift intervention is also paramount.

The Ministry concludes its advisory by underscoring that a simple carbon monoxide detector can make a life-saving difference. It calls on all citizens to prioritize the safety and well-being of themselves and their families by adhering to these essential safety precautions within their homes. Protecting against the ‘silent killer’ requires constant awareness and proactive measures.
