Algiers – The Algerian government is proposing a new law governing political parties, aiming to reshape the political landscape and bolster democratic institutions. The Minister of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transport, Said Saayoud, stated today that the draft law seeks to reorganize political practices based on stronger constitutional, legal, and institutional foundations.
Speaking on Sunday, January 18, 2026, Minister Saayoud emphasized the importance of this legislative initiative. He explained that the proposed law aims to ensure that political parties serve as a fundamental pillar in building robust and effective state institutions. The reform is designed to promote a more structured and legally sound environment for political activity within the country.
“This law is crucial for reinforcing the role of political parties in Algeria,” stated Minister Saayoud. “It will provide a clearer framework for their operations and responsibilities, ensuring they contribute effectively to the democratic process.”
The government hopes that the new legislation will lead to greater transparency, accountability, and efficiency within the political system. Further details of the proposed law are expected to be released in the coming weeks, paving the way for public discussion and debate before its submission to parliament.
The proposed changes come at a time when Algeria is seeking to modernize its governance structures and strengthen its democratic credentials. The government believes that a well-defined and regulated political party system is essential for achieving these goals.
