Senegal Clinches AFCON 2025 Title Amidst Controversy

Senegal has emerged victorious in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, securing their second title in history. The Lions of Teranga defeated host nation Morocco 1-0 after extra time in a tightly contested final held Sunday evening at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

The match concluded goalless after regulation time, characterized by cautious play from both sides. Morocco squandered several opportunities, most notably a missed penalty by Ibrahim Diaz in the dying moments of the second half, denying them a potential victory.

Controversy erupted in the final minutes due to contentious refereeing decisions. A Senegalese goal was disallowed without VAR review, and a penalty was awarded to Morocco during a critical juncture of the game. Despite the tense atmosphere, play continued, ultimately deciding the champion on the field.

The decisive moment arrived early in the first extra time period. Pape Gueye’s powerful strike in the 94th minute proved unstoppable, handing Senegal the lead. Morocco attempted to equalize, but Senegal’s solid defense held firm, securing the championship for the Lions of Teranga.

This victory marks Senegal’s second AFCON title, following their triumph in 2021, solidifying their position as a dominant force in African football. Senegal also extended their impressive unbeaten streak in the Africa Cup of Nations to 18 matches.

Morocco, despite the home advantage and fervent fan support, fell short of claiming the continental title, extending their wait of over fifty years. The Atlas Lions displayed commendable performance throughout the tournament.

Both Morocco and Senegal will now focus on preparing for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, scheduled to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico this summer. The AFCON 2025 final will be remembered for its drama and Senegal’s ultimate triumph.
