Algiers, January 18, 2026 – A major infrastructure project is poised to transform Algeria into a global leader in phosphate exports. The Eastern Mining Railway, a critical link connecting Annaba to the Tebessa region, is undergoing intensive evaluation to ensure its timely completion.
Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, Abdelkader Djeloui, presided over extensive working sessions Sunday evening dedicated to assessing progress on the 422-kilometer railway line. The Minister emphasized the strategic importance of this project, which is integral to the broader integrated phosphate development plan.
During the sessions, Minister Djeloui instructed both national and international companies involved in the construction to accelerate the pace of work. He stressed the need to deploy all available human and material resources to meet contractual deadlines. Djeloui warned that any delays would be unacceptable given the current economic stakes.
A specific focus of the second session was the 121-kilometer section between Bouchgouf, Souk Ahras, and Dhriat. The Minister conducted a detailed analysis of the progress achieved on the ground. He issued firm directives for close coordination with local authorities to resolve any technical or logistical obstacles that might impede construction. Construction companies pledged their full commitment to adhering to the established timelines.
The Eastern Mining Railway is considered a cornerstone of Algeria’s ambition to become a global phosphate production and export hub. This vital infrastructure will enable the efficient transportation of large quantities of raw materials to export ports. Minister Djeloui’s regular on-site monitoring underscores the government’s commitment to delivering this strategic mining project on schedule, driving development in Algeria’s eastern regions.
