Algeria Eyes Seven New Players to Boost National Team

DZWatch Exclusive: Following Algeria’s exit from the Africa Cup of Nations, the national team is already looking ahead to the next international break in March. Sources indicate that the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) is in negotiations with as many as seven new players to strengthen the squad.

While some view Algeria’s quarter-final appearance in the AFCON as satisfactory, others believe the team is capable of achieving more. Consequently, the upcoming training camp is seen as an opportunity to make necessary improvements.

Among the names linked to the national team is reportedly young Lille midfielder, Ethan Mbappé. Discussions with Mbappé are said to have occurred indirectly through intermediaries prior to the AFCON. However, Mbappé has not yet changed his sporting nationality, making any immediate inclusion in the Algerian squad speculative. He would first need to formally switch allegiances, a process that takes time.

Another player mentioned is Elyaz Zidane, son of Zinedine Zidane. Similar to the situation with Mbappé, Elyaz would need to change his sporting nationality to represent Algeria. Currently, he plays for Real Betis B in the Spanish fourth division. Any potential call-up would likely be to assess the player within the squad. Given his age (19), Zidane may also prefer to wait for opportunities with France or even Spain.

The FAF is also reportedly interested in Maxime Lopez, a player who may be more readily available due to less competition for his international services. The Parisian player is one of the four players associated with the national team.

It is important to note that coach Petkovic is not known for making wholesale changes to the team. The focus will likely be on integrating a few key players to enhance the existing squad, while also welcoming back players who were sidelined due to injury during the AFCON.
