Algiers, January 21, 2026 – The High Islamic Council, in collaboration with the League of Scholars, Preachers, and Imams of Sahel Countries, is hosting a high-level scientific conference today in Algiers. The conference, titled “Religious Diplomacy in the African Sahel: Potential and Stakes,” will be held at the Council’s headquarters in El Biar.
The event is expected to draw significant official participation, reflecting Algeria’s commitment to fostering intellectual security and spiritual depth within its regional sphere of influence. The program includes official addresses, specialized academic sessions, and contributions from a distinguished panel of speakers and scholars.
Among the notable speakers are Professor Dr. Abd al-Rahman Sannousi and Professor Mohamed Deif from Algeria, Sheikh Moussa Sar from Mauritania, Dr. Hamza Ahmadai Moussa from Chad, and Sheikh Alfa Dahiya Kunta from Mali. Their presentations will analyze Algeria’s approach to the Sahel region, highlighting the existing state of civilizational and social fusion among the countries in the area.
The conference aims to explore the role of religious diplomacy in addressing the complex challenges facing the Sahel, including extremism, poverty, and instability. Participants will examine how religious leaders and institutions can contribute to promoting peace, reconciliation, and sustainable development in the region.
