January 21, 2026 – Several regions of Algeria are experiencing severe weather conditions today, with heavy snowfall in mountainous areas and torrential rainfall in other parts of the country. Residents are urged to exercise caution and stay informed about weather updates.
Significant snowfall is expected to continue through midday in the highlands exceeding 1000 meters in altitude. Regions affected include Tissemsilt, Tiaret, Naama, El Bayadh, Laghouat, and Djelfa. Snow accumulation is forecast to exceed 20 centimeters in these areas.
Further east, the provinces of Batna, Khenchela, and Tebessa are also bracing for heavy snowfall in areas above 1200 meters. Accumulation could reach up to 10 centimeters, with the snowfall expected to persist until midday.
In a separate weather alert, torrential thunderstorms are impacting several western and central provinces. Rainfall exceeding 120 millimeters is anticipated through midday in Mostaganem, Chlef, Tipaza, Ghilizane, Tiaret, Ain Defla, Tissemsilt, Medea, and Blida. Motorists should be aware of flash flooding in these areas.
The capital, Algiers, along with Boumerdes, Tizi Ouzou, Bouira, M’Sila, Djelfa, Laghouat, Saida, and Mascara, are also under a heavy rainfall advisory. Rainfall amounts could surpass 60 millimeters, continuing until 3 PM.
The eastern regions, including Bejaia, Jijel, Skikda, Annaba, El Tarf, Setif, Bordj Bou Arreridj, Mila, Constantine, Guelma, Souk Ahras, Khenchela, Oum El Bouaghi, Tebessa, and Batna, are expected to experience thunderstorms with rainfall exceeding 60 millimeters. These conditions are forecast to last until 6 PM.
Authorities are advising residents to take necessary precautions and avoid unnecessary travel during this period of inclement weather.
