Algeria Eyes Green Growth Partnership with Global Institute

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Yacine Oualid, received the Director-General of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), Mr. Sanghyup Kim, on Wednesday, marking a significant step towards potential collaboration. The visit underscores Algeria’s commitment to sustainable development, particularly within its agricultural and fisheries sectors.

During the meeting, both parties explored avenues for cooperation, focusing on strategies to bolster sustainable development in the face of climate change challenges. The discussion highlighted Algeria’s experience in developing Saharan agriculture, aimed at sustainably meeting national food needs by utilizing the country’s southern natural resources.

Minister Oualid emphasized Algeria’s long-standing efforts in combating desertification, notably through the Green Dam project. This initiative is currently undergoing a comprehensive rehabilitation as part of the national strategy to adapt to climate change and achieve sustainable development in the High Plateaus region. The national afforestation program and the revitalization of areas affected by fires were also discussed, including large-scale campaigns like the October 2025 initiative that saw one million trees planted in a single day, with a follow-up planned for February 2026 to plant five million more.

Mr. Kim presented an overview of the GGGI, its mission, and its role in supporting sustainable development. Following the presentation, both parties identified several areas for potential collaboration. These include providing technical support for the establishment of a center of excellence for agriculture in arid regions of Algeria. The exchange of expertise in green growth, and the role of innovation and artificial intelligence were also key topics.

Furthermore, the discussions touched on providing technical support for financing sustainable agricultural projects and the possibility of launching programs encompassing the water, food, and energy nexus. This collaboration aims to foster a more resilient and environmentally conscious agricultural sector in Algeria. The partnership signifies a commitment to a greener future, leveraging international expertise to enhance Algeria’s sustainable development goals.
