Algeria Strengthens Continental Presence in Artificial Intelligence

Algiers Solidifies Role in African AI Development

Algeria is taking significant strides to enhance its influence in the realm of digital transformation and artificial intelligence. Sid Ali Zerrouki, Minister of Post and Telecommunications, recently participated, via video conference, in the inaugural official meeting for the establishment of the African Artificial Intelligence Council, an initiative under the Smart Africa alliance.

This participation follows Minister Zerrouki’s appointment as a member of this high-level continental council. The council comprises a select group of decision-makers and experts in artificial intelligence from across the African continent, a move reflecting growing confidence in Algeria’s role on the African digital stage.

Elite Selection from 226 African Figures

The appointment is considered a notable achievement, as the council members were chosen from a pool of 226 prominent individuals, including 54 ministers. The final composition consists of only 15 members, including five ministers, six specialized experts, and four co-chairs who will be elected in early March.

The election of the co-chairs is expected to take place during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, a leading global event in the field of communications and modern technologies.

Tripartite Committee for Member Selection

The selection of council members was conducted by a tripartite committee consisting of the International Telecommunication Union, the African Union, and Smart Africa, ensuring balanced representation and high-level expertise in shaping the future of artificial intelligence on the continent.

African Roadmap for Artificial Intelligence

The first meeting served as an opportunity to discuss and develop a roadmap for activating the African Artificial Intelligence Council. Discussions also encompassed mechanisms for implementing the African strategy in this field, with a focus on accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence technologies in a responsible, inclusive, and sovereign manner, considering the specific characteristics of African nations and serving the interests of their people. The council’s annual meeting program was also addressed, identifying key upcoming milestones, along with discussions on establishing specialized technical working groups to address the regulatory, ethical, and technical aspects related to artificial intelligence.

This move underscores Algeria’s commitment to playing a leading role in the development and implementation of AI strategies across Africa.
