Algiers, Algeria – Boualem Boualem, the Director of the Presidential Cabinet, has refuted recent speculation suggesting that the Algerian military establishment rejected the proposed technical amendment to the constitution. His statement comes after the postponement of discussions regarding both the constitutional amendment and the organic law on elections.
Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting held today at the Palace of Nations with leaders of various political parties, Mr. Boualem clarified that the delay in reviewing the two drafts was not related to the absence of Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army, Lieutenant General Said Chengriha, from a previous Council of Ministers meeting.
Instead, Mr. Boualem emphasized that the postponement was intended to allow for further input and enrichment of the texts by representatives from the political parties. This collaborative approach, he stated, aims to ensure a more comprehensive and inclusive outcome for both the constitutional amendment and the electoral law.
Addressing the absence of Lieutenant General Chengriha from the Council of Ministers meeting, Mr. Boualem explained that it was due to a scheduling conflict, as the Chief of Staff was on leave at the time. He firmly dismissed any suggestion that the absence signaled disagreement or disapproval of the proposed amendments.
The clarification from the Director of the Presidential Cabinet seeks to dispel rumors and reaffirm the government’s commitment to a transparent and participatory process in the ongoing reforms. The constitutional amendment and the electoral law are considered key pillars in the broader efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and enhance political stability in Algeria. Further updates will be provided as the discussions progress.
