Education Minister Denies Islamic Studies Removal for Sciences

Algiers, January 24, 2026 – The Minister of National Education, Mohamed Seghir Saadaoui, has refuted claims circulating regarding the alleged removal of Islamic Studies from the Baccalaureate examination for science streams.

The Minister made the statement today, Saturday, during his supervision alongside the Minister of Communication at the opening of a training day for journalists. Saadaoui emphasized that the Ministry’s primary responsibility is to “protect and safeguard national identity.”

Addressing the concerns, Minister Saadaoui stated, “The Ministry is committed to upholding the integrity of the national curriculum and ensuring that all students receive a comprehensive education that reflects our cultural and religious values.”

Furthermore, Saadaoui proposed the establishment of a cell within the Ministry of National Education, headed by the person in charge of information, to “unify information and obtain it from its source,” with the aim of ensuring accuracy. This initiative seeks to combat the spread of misinformation and provide journalists with reliable and verified data.

The Minister also expressed his anticipation that these joint sessions between the two ministries would conclude with an agreement on the use of “meaningful” terms and phrases to ensure the true meaning is conveyed, calling for avoiding generalizations and accompanying this “sensitive” sector with calm media language.

The Ministry of Education has reaffirmed its commitment to providing quality education that fosters national pride and cultural understanding.

This announcement comes amidst ongoing discussions about educational reforms and the importance of maintaining a balanced curriculum that prepares students for the challenges of the 21st century while preserving Algeria’s rich heritage.
