Algeria Pursues Democratic Reform Through Constitutional Amendments

Algeria is taking significant steps to bolster its democracy and reinforce the rule of law through proposed constitutional and electoral amendments. A special conference was convened, bringing together leaders from various political parties to discuss the technical revisions to the Constitution and the organic law pertaining to the electoral system. This collaborative approach aims to strengthen the democratic process and complete the institutional framework.

Prime Minister Sifi Ghrib emphasized the importance of the conference as a platform to present and explain the proposed amendments. He stressed that these changes reflect the state’s unwavering commitment to pursuing political and legal reforms. The Prime Minister highlighted the 2020 Constitution as a landmark achievement and a fundamental national gain, contributing to the consolidation of the rule of law, the strengthening of state institutions, and the guarantee of freedoms and rights. It also injected new dynamism into political life and the role of civil society.

Ghrib further noted that achieving a balance of powers is a cornerstone of the constitutional structure, enhancing institutional stability. He affirmed that entrusting the Ministry of Interior with the material and logistical aspects of the electoral process will be accompanied by the provision of all necessary resources, while enabling the Independent National Elections Authority to exercise its supervisory and oversight functions as stipulated in the Constitution.

The Prime Minister underscored that the success of these reforms hinges on the involvement of all stakeholders, including institutions, political parties, civil society, and the media. He called for responsible and constructive dialogue that serves the supreme national interest. Ghrib reiterated the government’s commitment to continuing the reform path and engaging positively with various proposals, believing that the anticipated amendments will enhance political stability and support the development process. The technical amendment project is part of completing the institutional structure five years after the adoption of the 2020 Constitution. These reforms are seen as vital for Algeria’s future.

The government believes that these changes will strengthen Algeria.
