Sudan Conflict: 8 Million Children Deprived of Education

DZWatch Exclusive: The ongoing conflict in Sudan has deprived an estimated 8 million children of their fundamental right to education, according to recent reports.

The disruption to the education system is widespread. It is estimated that approximately 6,400 schools are completely closed, offering no educational services whatsoever. Furthermore, a concerning 11 percent of schools are being used as shelters for displaced families or for purposes unrelated to education.

Forced displacement is a significant factor contributing to the educational crisis. Around 5 million children have been forced to flee their homes, severing their connection with teachers and learning resources. Compounding the problem, one in three schools are now non-functional due to destruction or other damage caused by the conflict.

“These figures represent a profound educational crisis, threatening the future of an entire generation in Sudan,” a DZWatch analyst noted. Urgent action is needed from relevant authorities and the international community to provide alternative educational opportunities for affected children and to protect schools from being repurposed as shelters or conflict zones.

Ensuring access to education for children is not merely an option but a fundamental humanitarian imperative, especially in conflict-affected areas where risks are amplified and the impact of conflict on childhood is accelerated. The continuation of this crisis will have far-reaching consequences for children, including the loss of essential skills and increased dropout rates.

DZWatch will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
