President Donald Trump has approved emergency declarations for ten states as a major winter storm impacts a large swath of the United States. The states included in the declaration are Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Indiana, and West Virginia.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the emergency declarations were made to ensure the safety of citizens in the face of the severe winter storm. He emphasized that federal authorities are working closely with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), state governors, and local emergency response teams in the affected areas.
The massive winter storm began impacting the United States on Saturday, with warnings issued for over 170 million Americans across more than 30 states, according to the National Weather Service. The storm, dubbed ‘Vern,’ is expected to bring significant snowfall, travel disruptions, and potential power outages.
The National Weather Service forecasts substantial snow accumulations and hazardous travel conditions across the affected regions. Authorities are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to take precautions to protect themselves and their property.
The storm has already led to widespread travel disruptions. More than 10,000 flights have been canceled across the United States in anticipation of the storm’s impact. Thousands of additional flight cancellations are expected as the storm intensifies throughout the weekend and into early next week.
The winter storm originated in the region encompassing Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming, and is now moving eastward. Forecasters predict that the storm will reach the northeastern region, including the capital, Washington D.C., later today.
