Cabinet Postpones Review of Constitution, Electoral Law Amendments

Algiers – The Council of Ministers has deferred consideration of the proposed technical amendments to the Constitution and the organic law pertaining to the electoral system. This decision, made during a meeting presided over by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in late December, aims to further enrich the drafts and ensure comprehensive revisions.

Boualem Boualem, Director of the President’s Office, confirmed the postponement. He emphasized that the delay is solely for the purpose of improving the proposed legal texts. The move, he stated, will allow for a deeper examination of the amendments, incorporating diverse perspectives and ensuring alignment with the nation’s best interests.

“The objective is to refine these crucial pieces of legislation to the highest possible standard,” Boualem explained. “This postponement reflects the government’s commitment to a meticulous and inclusive approach to governance.”

Addressing recent speculation, the Director of the President’s Office firmly dismissed any connection between the postponement and the absence of the Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defense, Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army, Lieutenant General Said Chengriha. He denounced such rumors as unfounded and misleading, clarifying that the decision to postpone was purely based on the need for further refinement of the drafts.

The technical amendments to the Constitution and the electoral law are considered vital steps in the ongoing process of political and institutional reform in Algeria. The government aims to ensure that these amendments reflect the aspirations of the Algerian people and contribute to a more transparent and democratic political landscape.

The revised drafts are expected to be presented to the Council of Ministers for review at a later date, following the completion of the enrichment process. The government has reiterated its commitment to transparency and open dialogue throughout this process, ensuring that all stakeholders have the opportunity to contribute to the final versions of the amendments.
