Meta has announced a temporary suspension of adolescent access to its AI persona features across its applications worldwide. This decision comes as the company is developing an updated version of these AI personalities specifically tailored for younger users.
In a blog post addressing child safety, Meta stated, “Starting in the coming weeks, teens will no longer be able to access AI personas across our apps until the upgraded experience is ready.” The company aims to ensure a safer and more controlled environment for teenagers interacting with AI.
The updated version will include parental control features designed to ensure safe usage by adolescents upon its release. This initiative follows criticism Meta received regarding the behavior of its AI personas in conversations with younger users.
Last October, Meta introduced parental controls allowing parents to disable their children’s private chats with chatbots. However, the company confirmed these controls are not yet fully implemented. These measures are part of Meta’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety on its platforms.
Meta indicated that AI experiences for teens will be based on a “PG-13” rating system. This system aims to prevent access to inappropriate content. The company is committed to providing a safer digital environment for younger age groups, and this suspension is a significant step in that direction.
The move reflects Meta’s dedication to responsible AI development and deployment, particularly concerning vulnerable users. The company is actively working to address concerns and create a secure and beneficial experience for all users of its platforms.
