Algiers, Algeria – Several regions of Algeria are preparing for a significant weather disturbance expected to begin on Saturday, January 25, 2026. The national meteorological services have issued Level 2 weather alerts, warning of substantial snowfall, heavy rainfall, and strong winds that could disrupt traffic and daily activities.
Snowfall Expected in Eastern Highlands and High Plateaus
According to forecasts, areas above 1000 meters in elevation in eastern Algeria and the high plateaus, including Bordj Bou Arreridj, Setif, Batna, Khenchela, Oum El Bouaghi, and Tebessa, are expected to experience snowfall of up to 10 cm. This is anticipated to begin Saturday afternoon and continue until Sunday morning. Snowfall is also expected in central regions, particularly Blida, Medea, Bouira, Tizi Ouzou, and Bejaia, with accumulations of 5 to 10 cm in higher elevations from Saturday evening to Sunday midday. In western regions, snowfall could reach 15 cm in the mountains of Tlemcen and Sidi Bel Abbes.
Western and Southern Plateaus Also Prepare for Snow
The provinces of Naama, Tiaret, Tissemsilt, Saida, northern El Bayadh, Laghouat, and Djelfa are also expected to be affected by the weather system. Snowfall is predicted in mountainous areas, with accumulations of 5 to 10 cm from Saturday morning through Sunday.
Strong Winds and Heavy Rain in Several Regions
Meteorological services have also warned of strong winds affecting the provinces of Naama, El Bayadh, Laghouat, Djelfa, M’Sila, and Ouled Djellal. Wind speeds could reach 60 to 70 km/h, with gusts exceeding 90 km/h, beginning early Sunday morning and continuing until Monday morning. Coastal and western areas, particularly northern Tlemcen, Ain Temouchent, Oran, and Mostaganem, are expected to experience westerly to northwesterly winds accompanied by significant rainfall of 20 to 30 mm. This will also affect the provinces of Chlef, Mascara, Relizane, El Tarf, Guelma, Souk Ahras, Oum El Bouaghi, Khenchela, and Tebessa.
Authorities are urging road users to exercise caution, especially in mountainous areas, and to stay informed about weather updates. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property during this period of severe weather.
