Aden Governor Discusses Military Redeployment with UN Official

Aden’s Governor, Abdul Rahman Sheikh, stated on Sunday that the completion of military redeployment steps in the interim capital demonstrates a clear commitment to building state institutions and strengthening the rule of law.

During a meeting with Albert Scott, director of the Office of the UN Envoy to Yemen, Sheikh emphasized that achieving security and stability is a top priority for the local authority in the governorate. The meeting focused on the progress of redeploying military forces outside of Aden.

Both parties also discussed the importance of the upcoming South-South dialogue in Riyadh, sponsored by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The Governor and the UN official reviewed the local authority’s efforts, in coordination with relevant bodies and the Saudi-led coalition, to implement the military redeployment plan. The aim is to remove military forces from Aden, contributing to enhanced security, reinforcing the city’s civilian character, normalizing life, and improving services.

On Saturday, a meeting between Yemeni authorities and the Saudi-led Arab Coalition in Aden addressed the coordination of efforts to finalize the implementation of the plan to remove military camps and redeploy them outside the strategic city. This followed approximately one week after the commencement of the first phase.

The meeting included local authorities in Aden, the leadership of the Ministry of Defense, the General Staff, and Major General Falah Al-Shahrani, an advisor to the commander of the joint forces of the Saudi-led coalition.

Last Monday, January 19th, the Protection Forces took over the Jabal Hadid camp, the closest military camp to the Presidential Palace in Maashiq, after its evacuation, under the supervision of the joint forces of the Saudi-led coalition. This handover marked a significant step in the ongoing efforts to demilitarize Aden and improve security for its residents.

The successful redeployment of military forces is seen as crucial for the long-term stability and development of Aden.
