A powerful winter storm continues to batter vast regions of the United States, prompting widespread disruptions and emergency declarations. Authorities have canceled thousands of flights and are bracing for potentially worsening conditions as temperatures plummet.
The severe weather system, which originated in Texas and has spread northeast, has led to the cancellation of over 10,000 flights nationwide. This brings the total number of flight cancellations since the beginning of the week to over 15,000. Travel is strongly discouraged in affected areas due to hazardous road conditions.
More than 730,000 people have lost power since the storm began. Freezing rain is expected, further complicating recovery efforts.
In New York City, the storm arrived early this morning and is forecast to continue throughout the day, transitioning into freezing rain later. While public transportation remains operational, the city is noticeably quieter than usual as snow removal efforts continue. Snowfall accumulations are projected to reach between 6 and 10 inches.
Many businesses have closed, and a significant number of employees are working remotely. Schools and universities have either suspended classes or switched to remote learning. Authorities are urging residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. The situation remains fluid, and residents are advised to monitor weather updates and heed safety warnings.
