Jijel’s Djen Djen Port has marked a significant milestone, positioning itself as a potential international logistics hub with its first transshipment operation. The port recently received a vessel carrying the equivalent of 800 container feet, including 200 feet designated for transshipment – a first for an Algerian port.
This achievement aligns with the directives of the Minister of Transportation, aimed at modernizing national ports and transforming them into regional and international logistics platforms. The goal is to attract maritime trade and enhance the competitiveness of the national economy.
This operation reflects the success of efforts to improve port efficiency and operational performance through expanded handling activities and value-added maritime services. It solidifies the Port of Djen Djen’s strategic position on the southern Mediterranean coast, enabling it to play a pivotal role in regional supply chains.
Authorities anticipate that this development will boost exports and logistics services, supporting the national drive to diversify the economy and expand foreign trade beyond hydrocarbons. This will be achieved by attracting new shipping lines and transforming Algeria into a key commercial transit point.
With this achievement, the Port of Djen Djen opens a new chapter, laying the groundwork for its transformation from a national port to an international logistics hub, consistent with the state’s vision for upgrading port facilities and strengthening Algeria’s presence in global trade.
DZWatch will continue to monitor the port’s progress and its impact on Algeria’s economy.
