Iran Imposes Strict Airspace Restrictions for 3 Months

Tehran, Iran – Iranian authorities have announced stringent restrictions on air traffic within its airspace, effective immediately and lasting for three months, until April 25th. The new regulations significantly impact visual flight rules (VFR) and general aviation activities.

A Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) issued Sunday details the restrictions, focusing on flights that rely on visual navigation, where pilots depend on visibility and favorable weather conditions rather than instrument-based flying. The restrictions also encompass general aviation, which includes non-commercial flights such as training flights and private aircraft operations.

Exceptions to the restrictions include flights operating within airport traffic areas, search and rescue missions, government and military flights, and helicopter operations by the National Oil Company, provided that coordination with air traffic control is maintained.

This decision comes amid heightened tensions in the region, fueled by escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, and amidst threats from the United States regarding potential strikes against Iranian targets. The region has been on edge due to recent events.

The restrictions also follow a period of internal unrest in Iran, with protests erupting in late December 2025 over economic grievances, including the devaluation of the local currency. The protests, which began in Tehran, spread to other cities, prompting President Pezeshkian to acknowledge public dissatisfaction.

The United States and its ally Israel have been increasing pressure on Iran since the start of the demonstrations. Washington has threatened potential military action, while Tehran has vowed to retaliate against any perceived aggression.
